Promajna which was once a fishing village and today a tourist place

Promajna is located between Baska Voda (4km) and Makarska (7km). It got its name after sunrise. The sun rises behind the mountain Biokovo at the foot of which is Promajna. Morning sunrise in Promajna is one of the attractions that you should definitely not miss. Promajna was first mentioned in 1674. A large number of archeological finds tell us that the area where Pomajna is located today has been inhabited since the 2nd century BC. Until the advent of tourism, people in Promajna were engaged in fishing. Tourism in Promajna and in general on the Makarska Riviera, but also in all coastal parts of Croatia, began with the construction of the Adriatic Highway in 1965. Shortly after the construction of the Adriatic Highway, the first hotels on the Makarska Riviera were opened. Promajna has a total capacity of about 1500 beds and according to the census has 270 inhabitants. Tourists have at their disposal a large number of modern apartments and villas with swimming pools and a one small hotel. From 2022, Promajna received a new Aparthotel. During the summer season, two Konzum and Studenac stores are available to tourists. On the waterfront in Promajna there is a small green market with fresh fruits and vegetables and a bakery. The bell tower and the spacious Church of All Saints, built in 1999, dominate the town center. Entertainment cafes are located on the beach while restaurants are located in the first row of houses by the sea. On the beach there is a beautifully landscaped park with benches and children’s play equipment. For children’s entertainment there are also several children’s playrooms. For all those who want adrenaline on the beach, there is a parasailing Orka that offers activities such as parasailing or jet skiing. Those who want to enjoy their vacation more peacefully can rent a boat. For all those who want to get to know the surroundings, Promajna Tours organizes various trips to Split, Dubrovnik, the islands of Brač and Hvar, the shrine of Medjugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Krka waterfalls and many others. You can also rent a car or a speedboat from us. Everything you can’t find in Promajna because it is still a small place, you can find in nearby Baška Voda or Makarska. What tourists are particularly interested in is where they can buy fresh fish. For that, it is best to get up very early and go to Makarska, where you can often find boats with freshly caught fish on the waterfront. If there are no boats, then you can find fish at the Makarska fish market.

Promajna what to see and where to go on a trip

Promajna is a small place and has no big sights but it is located in a very interesting environment. Split is only an hour’s drive away. Split is an old ancient city known for Diocletian’s Palace. A little further about 3 hours drive is Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik is a world-famous city for its history and its city walls. For those who like sea excursions, boats sail from Promajna every day to the islands of Brač and Hvar. On board you can enjoy Dalmatian fish specialties and taste Dalmatian wines. For those who like active holidays, there is the mountain Biokovo, which has many hiking trails. It is important to note that the mountain Biokovo is very dangerous and that you should not go on a trip without a professional guide. Also for those who like an active vacation but a little less extreme, there is a bike path by the sea from Brela to Tucepi.

Promajna where to eat and where to have fun

Promajna, like all small Dalmatian places, is known for its gastronomic offer. Although a small place, Promajna boasts the best restaurant on the Croatian coast in 2021. It is the Astoria restaurant located on the beach. Apart from the pleasant ambience, this restaurant stands out for its gastronomic offer, which has been recognized by the profession. Apart from this restaurant in Promajna, you can eat well in several places. There are restaurants Gastro, Edita, Hajduk, San and beach restaurants Hojalero, Poseidon and several others. All of them offer both Croatian and Dalmatian fish and meat specialties. In terms of entertainment, Promajna still lags behind other places on the Makarska Riviera. However, this is a small and quiet Dalmatian place oriented primarily to family vacations. For all those who want to have fun, there is Baška Voda, which can be reached on foot in just 30 minutes or Makarska, for which you still need transportation. Both Makarska and Baška Voda abound in entertainment venues so those who want a nice day spent in Promajna to continue their fun night have plenty of choices nearby.

Promajna Beaches

Perhaps the biggest asset of our small town are its beaches. Perhaps the most beautiful beach on the Makarska Riviera is the central beach in Promajna. This beach is not as long as it is big. The same part of the beach is in the sun as in the thick shade of the pine forest. Tourists have a beach for sunbathing and right behind a thick shade in which they can hide during the strongest sun or when they just want to get some sleep without fear of waking up sunburned. Also this beach is therefore ideal for children. At the end of the beach in the shade there is a children’s playground and across the beach bar. Ideal combination for parents with children. The beaches continue all the way to Baška Voda. All these are beautiful beaches ideal for swimming and enjoying the sun. The dog beach is also below the main beach.

Promajna weather

Promajna, like the whole of coastal Croatia, has a Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot here and winters are mild. However, the wind that blows from the land to the sea (Bura) can sometimes be so strong that it blows up to 200 km per hour. It blows so hard most winters. With lower temperatures in winter and such a wind the feeling of cold is well below zero. The climate is temperate here for most of the year. Temperatures are between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius. This kind of weather is ideal for walking, cycling and hiking. Although Promajna is only a summer destination, tourists who happen to come to Promajna in autumn, spring and even winter can enjoy the beautiful weather, pleasant climate and clean air while walking, cycling or climbing the mountain trails of Biokovo.
